A China trade stop does not shut U.S. raw steel. The industry produced 81 million tons of raw steel with an estimated sales value of about $120 billion. Combined raw steel production capacity was about 107 million tons per year. A calculated gap between those two figures is 26 million tons. Electric arc furnaces accounted for 72 percent of raw steel and basic oxygen furnaces 28 percent.

Direct China steel is a small slice of imports. The AISI country table, in thousands of net tons, shows a full-year total of 28,870. Canada was 6,557, Brazil 4,498, Mexico 3,517, South Korea 2,810, Vietnam 1,364, Japan 1,180, Germany 1,074, Taiwan 1,011, and China 508. Canada accounted for a calculated 22.7 percent of that steel-import total. China accounted for a calculated 1.8 percent of that steel-import total. Taiwan accounted for a calculated 3.5 percent of that steel-import total. Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, Vietnam, Japan, and Germany keep shipping when China stops. The scenario then restricts the Taiwan tons. The 1,011 thousand net tons are mill steel in that AISI table, not controllers and not mining equipment.

Finished machines are a Japan story, not a China story. United States imports of self-propelled bulldozers, graders, scrapers, excavators, shovel loaders, tamping machines, and road rollers were $10,897,578.55 thousand and 223,878 items. Japan supplied $5,346,358.18 thousand and 85,606 items. Japan accounted for a calculated 49.1 percent of that machine-import value. China supplied $557,592.71 thousand and 61,971 items. China accounted for a calculated 5.1 percent of that machine-import value. China accounted for a calculated 27.7 percent of those machine items. Brazil, Korea, Germany, and the United Kingdom also supplied large value lines. The code covers construction machines and mining machines. The page does not split them.

The dealer-parts exposure is larger than the finished-machine China slice. Imports of parts of cranes, work-trucks, shovels, and other were $4,559,773.14 thousand. China supplied $887,324.62 thousand and was the largest partner. China accounted for a calculated 19.5 percent of that parts-import value. Mexico supplied $650,753.35 thousand, Korea $510,025.92 thousand, Canada $474,111.92 thousand, and Japan $468,049.86 thousand. Those four keep shipping. The code is not a mining-wear-parts series.

Past the mill, steel service centers and distributors accounted for 23 percent of net shipments. Construction was 28 percent, automotive 15 percent, and converting and processing 9 percent. Estimated employment was 81,000 at iron and steel mills and 56,000 in steel product manufacturing. Service-center stocks were 7.0 million tons at yearend.

Primary aluminium keeps a domestic base and a Canadian import base. Primary production was 670 thousand metric tons, worth about $1.9 billion. Net import reliance was 47 percent. Import sources for 2020-23 were Canada 56 percent, the United Arab Emirates 8 percent, Bahrain 4 percent, China 3 percent, and other 29 percent. Canada keeps shipping. Estimated employment in alumina and aluminium production was 30,000.

The short-horizon price analog is one month, not a year-over-year peak. Nearly one-fifth of the March increase in the index for processed goods for intermediate demand is attributable to a 13.5-percent jump in prices for iron and steel.

The reported first-half ceiling was an overall financial impact of up to $75 million. That Hydro figure is an observed aluminium-company cyber loss after plants were isolated. It is not a forecast of U.S. mill losses.

Domestic raw steel continues. The calculated spare-capacity gap of 26 million tons sits against a China import line of 508 thousand net tons. Those two figures use different published units and are not divided into a share here. The directional point is that the China steel line is the small one.

Partner steel that keeps moving is the AISI 2024 column: Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, Vietnam, Japan, and Germany. A separate USGS window for 2020-23 import sources was Canada 23 percent, Mexico 16 percent, Brazil 13 percent, the Republic of Korea 9 percent, and other 39 percent. That window is not the 2024 ton table.

Taiwan steel is a real metal flow in this industry. Taiwan supplied 1,011 thousand net tons, larger than China at 508. The scenario restricts or delays that Taiwan line. World raw-steel production in Taiwan was 19 million metric tons. That world figure is not a U.S. import.

Mill alloys do not have China as the top U.S. source. Ferrosilicon import sources for 2020-23 were Russia 37 percent, Brazil 14 percent, Canada 13 percent, Malaysia 9 percent, and other 27 percent. Manganese ore sources were Gabon 63 percent, South Africa 23 percent, and Mexico 13 percent. Ferromanganese sources were Malaysia 24 percent, Australia 16 percent, Norway 15 percent, and South Africa 14 percent. Those partners are outside the China stop. Russia is a separate risk and is not this scenario.

The world silicon-material base is still concentrated. China accounted for almost 80 percent of total global estimated production of silicon materials. U.S. ferrosilicon net import reliance was greater than 50 percent. A China stop removes a world producer even though China is not the top named U.S. ferrosilicon source.

Finished machines keep arriving from Japan, Brazil, Korea, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The China machine line that stops is $557,592.71 thousand and 61,971 items, a high unit count at a low unit value. Parts counters lose the largest HS 843149 partner and keep Mexico, Korea, Canada, and Japan.

Cyber disruption is layered on that physical chain as a planning model. The Hydro analog shows an aluminium company isolating plants and running manually, with the loss concentrated in extruded solutions and a first-half ceiling of $75 million.
