A 2027 U.S.–China conflict with Australia aligned to the U.S. China trade stops immediately, Taiwan exports are slowed/limited, and China launches large-scale cyber disruption in waves. This is a planning scenario, not a forecast. Planning scenario, not a forecast. No end date is set.

What happens

What stops when China travel stops, what the booking file does, and what is not a room rate

  1. A China travel stop removes the largest international-spend origin. For the year ending December 2025 the survey puts China at 29 percent of spend in Australia, the United Kingdom at 7 percent, and New Zealand and the United States at 6 percent each. China spend was up 39 percent, trips up 18 percent, and nights up 19 percent on that year-ending comparison. The profile's 17 percent visitation increase is a different sentence on a different page and is not averaged with the 18 percent.

    tra.gov.autra.gov.au

  2. The quarter already shows how fast the China dollar can move, and why education has to be labeled. In the December quarter 2025, Chinese trips were up 25 percent, nights up 13 percent, and spend up 63 percent, or 763 million dollars, versus the December quarter 2024, driven by travel for education and holiday purposes. All-international holiday spend that quarter was up 30 percent or 891 million dollars, and education travel was up 37 percent or 706 million dollars. Those education dollars are a demand constraint on nights and on the spend total. They are not hotel fee income.

    tra.gov.au

  3. The holiday guest still buys activities a hotel and an attraction can sell. On the profile, eating out was 87 percent, shopping for pleasure 81 percent, the beach 71 percent, and sightseeing 70 percent. Museums or art galleries were 43 percent and wildlife parks, zoos, or aquariums were 35 percent. Those rates are the attraction book. They are not a room rate.

    tra.gov.au

  4. The guest who still comes from other origins has a short median stay. The ABS 2025-26 article says there were 9,101,120 visitor arrivals, an increase of 8.3 percent, holiday was 45.4 percent of journeys, and the median duration of stay was 12 days. The median stay is 12 days. New Zealand was the largest source at 15.6 percent on that article. China was second at 1,127,110 visits. Those arrivals are border crossings, not unique people.

    abs.gov.au

  5. Taiwan is a named row, not a residual. In July 2026 the short-term visitor table lists Taiwan at 23,910 beside China at 117,440. The 2025-26 media release prints China at 1,127,110 and 12 percent of 9,101,120, and footnote (a) says the China figure excludes SARs and Taiwan. A full-year Taiwan total is not in that top five. Other Asia is not used as a substitute.

    abs.gov.auabs.gov.au

  6. The first cyber path is the property system that stores the booking. RMS contained unauthorised activity and kept rotating API credentials used by integrations. Some customers had integration trouble while that rotation ran. Assigning that class of system to wave 1, shared booking vendors used by medium businesses to wave 2, and the long tail of small tourism businesses to wave 3 is the planning model. The Volt Typhoon page does not print that order.

How hard, how soon

0–3 months

  • Short-horizon arrival print: July 2026 short-term visitor arrivals were 710,980, a decrease of 4.3 percent on one year earlier. The level is the monthly print. The monthly arrival decline is 4.3 percent. The 4.3 percent change is not the only figure in this band.

    abs.gov.au

  • Short-horizon hotel analog: Adelaide and Darwin occupancy were both down 5.1 percent in the month to 25 July versus July 2025. The named booking analog is the RMS guest-file incident, with no published day count of a property closure.

    accommodationaustralia.orgstatus.rmscloud.com

1–6 months

  • Half-year analog: national occupancy across six months was up only 0.9 percent. Sydney occupancy moved from 79.0 percent to 80.3 percent and the average rate rose 7.3 percent to 283.36 dollars. The half-year Sydney rate increase is 7.3 percent.

    accommodationaustralia.org

  • China quarter analog: spend in the December quarter 2025 was up 63 percent, or 763 million dollars, on education and holiday. The holiday guest inside a full year is 403,110 people. Losing that guest over two quarters is the volume case. The education dollars are not the hotel case.

    tra.gov.autra.gov.au

12+ months

  • Long-horizon spend band: total visitor spending reached 192.4 billion dollars, up 6.5 percent on 2024. The visitor-spending increase is 6.5 percent. International visitor spend was 39.2 billion dollars and includes education. The non-war profile reaches over 1.45 million Chinese visitors in 2030.

Wave 1

Wave 1 is the property-management guest record and the rooms that cannot be sold while that record is contained. Guest phishing is the indirect guest effect of the same breach. RMS is the observed Australian path: identification on 26 October 2026, ACSC notification on 30 October 2026, and a global book of more than 6,000 properties. The Australian page had no duration. The foreign duration analog is Omni, which restored systems a week later. That week is not an Australian closure. This ordering is a planning inference on top of the Volt Typhoon pre-positioning description.

status.rmscloud.cominsurancebusinessmag.comtechcrunch.comcisa.govtra.gov.au

Wave 2

Wave 2 is the shared booking vendor used by medium businesses, as a direct target, and the China holiday guest, the attraction, and the international-spend share as indirect losses. The physical room can be open while the vendor cannot be trusted and while the China guest cannot fly. This ordering is a planning inference.

status.rmscloud.comtra.gov.autra.gov.au

Wave 3

Wave 3 is the distributed small-business file as a direct target, and the education-expenditure composition plus the Taiwan arrival row as indirect items. Approximately 95 percent of tourism-related businesses have fewer than 20 employees. Education expenditure stays labeled out of room revenue. This ordering is a planning inference.

What to do

Day 7

  • Separate in-house and on-books groups into China holiday, China education, Taiwan-named, and everyone else. The holiday baseline is 403,110. The education baseline is 238,170 and must not be scored as room revenue. The Taiwan baseline that is named is 23,910 in July 2026.

    tra.gov.auabs.gov.au

  • Prove a reservation can be confirmed if the property-management vendor is contained. RMS exposed booking details and warned of phishing. Cards were not in that set. Tell guests not to trust unexpected reconfirmation messages.

    status.rmscloud.com

Day 30

  • Watch the ABS China month against 117,440, the July 2026 level, and watch the monthly arrival decline against 4.3 percent. Both are printed. Half of 117,440 is calculated and is not the watch line. Watch Taiwan against 23,910 on the same table. Do not use a China total that includes Taiwan.

    abs.gov.au

  • Watch city occupancy against the July partial month, when Adelaide and Darwin were both down 5.1 percent, and against the half-year national occupancy increase of 0.9 percent.

    accommodationaustralia.org

Day 90

  • Re-cut China product toward zero and keep New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States, and India on the books. Re-base spend forecasts off the 29 percent China share only after subtracting the education composition. The 66 percent education share is not a room forecast.

    tra.gov.autourism.australia.com

  • Keep the small-business file staffed for a manual sell path. Approximately 95 percent of tourism-related businesses have fewer than 20 employees. Accommodation survival over four years was 64 percent. The ACSC all-sector small-business cost of 56,600 dollars is a planning reference, not a hotel invoice.

    tra.gov.aucyber.gov.au

What to watch

By role

Hotel owners and operators

  • Staff China holiday groups to zero and keep a manual confirm path if the property-management vendor is contained.

  • Do not budget the 8.1 billion dollars of education-related expenditure as room revenue.

  • Watch Sydney and national occupancy against the fetched half, not against an unpublished full-year card.

tra.gov.autourism.australia.comstatus.rmscloud.comaccommodationaustralia.org

Tour operators and attractions

  • Reprice China holiday departures using the 41 percent purpose and the activity rates, not the 29 percent spend share.

  • Hold Taiwan product at the July 2026 count of 23,910 until an annual total is published.

tra.gov.auabs.gov.au

Inbound-tourism bodies

  • Report China as 29 percent of international spend and as first in expenditure, and report the 66 percent education share in the same sentence.

  • Shift paid demand generation toward New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States, and India, which remain on the opened top-market lists.

tra.gov.autourism.australia.com

Lenders and insurers

  • Do not covenant the 12.3 billion dollar Chinese trip total as room cash. Covenant the China arrival month and the half-year occupancy change.

  • Treat the ACSC cost averages as all-sector references. Small 56,600 dollars, medium 97,200 dollars, and large 202,700 dollars are not lodging claims.
